scouts raise funds for World Water Day
Imagine life without a toilet. No toilets in your home or school, no public toilets, no toilets anywhere. Imagine the mess. Imagine the disease.
We take it for granted. It’s hard to imagine life without something we take for granted, but this is the daily reality for 2.6 billion people. 40% of the worlds population.
This was the message the 15th Didcot Scouts wanted to get across when they completed their Global Challenge Badge in Didcot’s Orchard centre on Saturday.
The Scouts used their pioneering skills to construct a hanging latrine, similar to the type millions of people in the developing world use everyday. They also took it in turns to walk 10km in relays up & down Orchard Street Carrying water on their heads, to gain some understanding of what daily life is like for millions of children in 3rd world countries. With the help of a walking tap the Scouts were able to raise £122.19 for Water Aid, the charity which aims to raise awareness of the lack of safe water and sanitation around the world.
Scout Leader Alan Leader said ‘ When the Scouts discovered how many people around the world do not have access to toilets and safe water, the things they take for granted, they really wanted to do something to help.’
